EEB back issues online

This is a quirky radio and electronics magazine published in Tasmania during the 1960s & 70s. Like other small-scale publications (eg Colin Mitchell's Talking Electronics and, more recently, Dave Jones' EEV Blog) it reflects the eccentricities of its publishers. Not widely carried by libraries (unli...

Re: EMDRC Hamfest 29th March 2015

The extra exercise to walk a little further never did anyone any harm ;) Also trains and buses operate within walking distance to the venue. Short-armed hams should note that Seniors card holders (and some others) actually get free travel to Heathmont from as far away as Mornington, Lara, Melton, He...

Part 4 of UHF modules

Adding a DC bias can allow a mixed AM/FM mode that's audible on all receivers. It also permits some frequency agility.

Looks like the conductors are in parallel. Maybe it's a 2 band dipole with one part of each element cut. The balun is presumably 1:1.

Re: New VK3RGL 2m Beacon under construction. Ideas please.

1. How long should the duration of the un-keyed carrier be? I propose 5 minutes. 2. Should the un-keyed frequency be the key-up or key-down frequency? The present beacon has key-up, which makes sense to me, but I note there are other beacons that are key-down. 1. 1 min (with a short break if longer...

Re: Source for trim caps for VK7JJ squid pole antenna coil

25pF beehive trimmers are commonly found in VHF FM transceivers common at hamfests. Given that they're OK for 25-30w FM they should be OK for 100w SSB.

Re: Summer field day 2015 - 10/11 January 2015!

In addition I had my usual IC705MKIIG for 6m, 2m and 70cm, but used just a multiband vertical on a bonnet mount on the car, noting that it isn't specified to work on 70cm! Bryon - your 2m signal was very good. Earlier on I was testing a (very deaf) 2m homebrew direct conversion receiver by the wate...

Fickle 50 MHz went from being hardly worth the trouble setting up for (in previous field days) to the stand-out performer this time.

(an event for those who love homebrew portable radio equipment, outdoors transmitting and QRP operating) Following last November’s successful event where we smashed all attendance records, we're doing it again. A fourth 'QRP by the Bay' gathering will be held on Saturday February 14, 2015 at Chelsea...

Great idea! For a single operator, especially if operating from portable locations, one band is enough.

As for Foundations and Standards, give participants 5 extra points if they drag an unrelated Standard or Foundation along.

Re: VKCC Hijack of the Trans Tasman Contest

IIRC the Trans Tasman has always been an independently - run contest, with the WIA broadcast, website and magazine only providing coverage as a courtesy. Hence the WIA president and board may not be the right people to approach to suggest changes to a contest they do not run. On the other hand, with...

Something I didn't previously know, until today... Hiram Maxim, founder of the ARRL, invented the "Maxim machine gun", " the first portable, fully automatic machine gun ". Interesting, thanks. Reading the Wikipedia article, it seems his father invented the gun, not HPM. However it may be that the y...

Re: Auot Mute a Second Radio

Dear VK Logger Brainstrust, I'm looking for ideas on the ways that I can do the following: 2 single band VHF and UHF roadios running with external speakers. They receive the same signal, the VHF one direct and the UHF through a cross band repeater from a simplex VHF signal. I want to Tx on either o...
