Re: What's on your Workbench?

In an effort to avoid the dreaded lurker status, though not too successfully :D
Started an AD8307-based power meter.

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Great to see projects, large and small, continuing to fill this thread. Something I've had taking up valuable bench space is a proto-board that needed attention. The double-sided tape holding the socket-strips had turned into a resin mess and no longer doing much sticking. After a bit of careful sur...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Gathered together a few round "to-its" and produced this reverse protected DC distribution box. Circuits for this kind of thing abound on the interwebs, this one based on an article by Dale Hughes VK1DSH "A polarity protection circuit using a power FET", Amateur Radio Jan/Feb 2011. dcpower.jpg All a...

Re: Simple collinear antenna in Sep "Silicon Chip"

Thanks Owen, it is becoming clearer. Antennas are a bit of a dark art to me.
And now having taken this thread off topic, I'll leave it to others to hopefully add their findings from constructing the SC antenna.

Re: Simple collinear antenna in Sep "Silicon Chip"

Fig 11 has several problems that prevent effective in-phase current distribution on the radiator. It inherits those problems in following W7LPN's 'improvements' to WA6SVT's implementation. The articles by DU1ANV, W7LPN, and WA6SVT do not give credible measurements of gain or models to substantiate ...

Re: Simple collinear antenna in Sep "Silicon Chip"

I've been following the Silicon Chip (SC) series of articles on DVB-T dongles and it was the fascinating Flight Radar article which had me searching the interwebs for suitable antennas. The pricier commercial products seem to favour the co-linear theme and either prompted by that, or more likely she...

Re: Don't deal with Element 14 (fmrly Farnell)

I can't remember when I started buying from Element14 but have always combined orders with family/friends to make a list. Then when funds allow make the order above the minimum and pay no postage. Actually you do but it's in the product margin and I'm sure Element14 have good volume rates from their...

Re: Easy ordering on new MiniKits website

A package has arrived of more very useful components stocked by Mark at Minikits. Ordering is so easy, you could really give the plastic a beating!
Hopefully, more "workbench" pics soon.

Re: CMOS RF Power Meter Calibrator (suit AD8307 power meter)

Part 2 The oscilloscope display on my Kenwood CS-1044 (40MHz) flat out at 0.2uS/div horizontal timebase looks like this. The input is through terminated with 50ohms. 02uS-web.jpg Fortunately the oscilloscope has x10 magnification and with a bit more vertical sensitivity (50mV/div) it’s possible to s...

CMOS RF Power Meter Calibrator (suit AD8307 power meter)

In a bid to measure what I experiment with, I'm in the process of constructing some 50 ohm RF testing devices. As my guide, I'm using the excellent series called "RF Workbench" on the QRP Homebuilder website (http://www.qrp.pops.net – select “Topics 2010-2013”). This is produced by Todd, VE7BPO, and...

Re: Jaycar 2013 Catalogue

The previous version (2012) was available as a PDF download, I dare say in time the latest one will be as well.

The recently released 2013 Altronics catalogue is already available as a PDF download. (http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=prtcat)

Your local radio club/group

I guess this should be titled "Your local radio club/group - what it does for you, what you do for it". Having searched here for the word "club" and checked the ensuing 34 pages (no I don't get out much!?) I was surprised to see so little of club activities. Maybe they are busy doing club activities...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Great to see so many projects, please keep those photos coming not matter the mess! For those who like photos of electronics and plenty of toroids, this Elecraft K2 project makes it's way on and off the workbench as time allows. So far it's been about six months and just about ready for the last adj...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

That was quick off the mark Peter and many thanks. This is a FET multimeter which got a bit erratic. Analog I know but it's the first one I bought and still get's regular use. fetmeter.jpg The fault was traced to a couple of trimpots, now removed on the left, similar to the one on the right. fetmete...

For those that want to keep automatic updates but not install IE10 just yet, you can use this Microsoft Tool:

And the "wish list" is a very useful feature for adding items over time and then easily converted to a "shopping cart" when ordering.

Re: The best radio you have ever owned?

Can't quite match the lists posted above but I do like the only radio I've been fortunate to possess, my FRG-7 (yes, no tx, long story). Bought straight from the shiny showcase of DSE Perth. Soon to be joined by an Elecraft K2. As an aside, that's an interesting cover headline "Spectrum Anarchy - al...

Re: Things I like about Amateur Radio

Coming back to the hobby after an extended gap, everything is pretty much new. I enjoy building things and at the moment it's right back to the basics of soldering and coil winding with an SDR project. Propagation. What a fascinating subject. I've just finished Poole's book and have more questions t...

Re: Advice on RF Signal Generator for HF/6m

Thanks for the many replies. A lot of points that I hadn't considered. I notice some of the ebay DDS offerings can measure up to 60MHz but only have generator frequencies of 2, 5 or 10MHz. Something to watch for in the details. I've decided to follow John's (vk4tj) advice and put together the k5bcq ...

Advice on RF Signal Generator for HF/6m

Hello Group I've have a couple of projects that have reached the point of requiring an RF signal generator, I don't have any transmitters or the budget for a R&S SMC100A however much I lust after it! Can the Group recommend a generator with the following requirements? 1) Frequency up to about 60MHz ...
