Re: 2013 Eta Aquarid meteor shower...

Thanks Jim, that is probably why I didn't see anything this morning, pointless looking to the horizon in metro Sydney due to glare from city lights. Hopefully will see something from Eta Aquarid shower.

Re: 2013 Eta Aquarid meteor shower...

Was outside looking for the Lyrids meteor shower (16th-25th April 2013 reported by Frank VK7DX) this morning (0400) as the sky was very clear, this shower is supposed to be peaking around now, however, nothing sighted through 10X50 binoculars. Maybe the peak, Monday 06th May for Eta Aquarid shower m...

Monday May 06th 2013, 0430-0530 EST, be interesting to see who comes on and if anything eventuates on the radio, could be good, and could be a fizzer who knows? We will not know if we don't give it a go I guess. The only hard part for some will be getting out of bed at that hour I guess, hope the sk...

Re: 2013 Eta Aquarid meteor shower...

It's in the topic box on the I-Chat Roger so most will see it I guess, so have you put your hand up for an early morning sojourn on 50MHz? :) Will be interesting, I remember a few years back we had a big meteor event and a few of us made the effort to rise early, Steve VK3OT and a couple of others t...

Re: 2013 Eta Aquarid meteor shower...

 So who is up for a meet-up on say 50.200MHz on the morning of Monday 06th May from 0430-0530 hours EST (1830-1930z) and see how we go? :P I will put my hand up, worth a try. How about Frank (DX), Roger (ZRH), Steve (ZAZ), John (PO), John (ZJB) and Norm (DUT) for starters? :?:  Usually I...

2013 Eta Aquarid meteor shower...

The following is an extract from this weeks "Central" a weekly paper for the Sydney CBD residents and districts: "Early rising Sydney residents will be able to witness one of the years best meteor showers next month (May 2013) thanks to Halleys Comet. The Eta Aquarid meteor shower will be one of the...

Re: What's on your Workbench?

Broken Shure 444D desk mic, been busted for around five years now, just haven't got around to looking at it. Besides, enjoying CW only on HF with the FT-1000D, don't really miss the desk mic. Now, if the straight key chucked it in, it would be fixed straight away. Also busted five element 50MHz beam...

Re: Bending the elements on a tri-band yagi

Wayne, it also depends on the quality of the aluminium tubing too, if it is shite then you risk snapping them if you bend that little bit too far. Maybe you will get SWR abnormality too.

Roger has the best option, roll up with a carton of beer and be neighbourly!

I am on my third Samsung, current is touch screen "Star" about three years old, never had any RF burns or hot feeling from any of the three Samsung mobiles over the years. Been with Virgin Mobile (now part of Optus) since they started here in Australia. Mobile is always in my left pocket, I experien...

Re: Are we there yet? AKA as BORED

Time is of the essence for major DXpeditions to far flung islands, everything is speed related, work them as quickly as possible then next, next one, next one and so on. The 599 report is standard fare, it makes it easier and quicker to log at the DXpedition end. The days of the "truthful" RST are n...

Re: Non receipt of renewal notice

Peter, it pays to make noted of your licence expiry date as not always do they send out a renewal notice, a lot of government departments are into cost cutting measures. I was told when I did not receive mine, and I made a telephone enquiry, that the onus is on the holder to renew on time, not the A...

Re: John Moyle Field Day 2013

It's a shame that 50MHz is so dead, I tuned up and down looking for any contestors in the Sydney region and beyond but not one voice heard. The talk about the WIA reminds me of my work place. Those who are not in the union are accused of enjoying benefits hard one by the union in the past, whilst un...

Re: Vertical questions

Height is might with any vertical, also it will receive and get out much better if it is mounted above any neighbouring objects. Best antenna that works well on 10(including 29MHz FM), 12, 15, 17 and 20m was a converted three radial Archer 5/8 groundplane CB antenna, I just added an extra eight feet...

VK5PO, well said John, CW will always be there for those who wish to excel at long distance contacts and chase the distance records... Re: Q codes

Come to think of it, I rarely use them on CW either. As Lou VK3ALB righfully says, they are not required on good clear voice communications anyway, if at all on voice? Bit like the silly CB radio "10 Code" not called for but there for the fun of it I guess. As VK7DR says, the abuse of "QRZ" is a jok...
